About

Born into a musical family, Friedrich Heinrich Kern wrote music from early childhood. Kern holds degrees in piano and composition from Mannheim University of Music in Germany, where his principal teachers included Rudolf Meister, Ok-hi Lee and Ulrich Leyendecker. With a scholarship from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Foundation, he pursued additional studies with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University. In 2006-2007, Friedrich Heinrich Kern studied traditional Korean music at Seoul National University in Korea on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service and Seoul National University. Awarded a MacCracken Fellowship from New York University, Friedrich Heinrich Kern returned to the United States in 2008 to focus on his growing compositional activities.

His creative output spans a wide range of musical genres: works for orchestra, film, and dance, and both electronic and instrumental music. Kern’s works now attract considerable attention, with performances and commissions by such prestigious ensembles as the Talea Ensemble and Ensemble Either/Or. Much of his work draws from literary or visual stimuli and is inspired by close artistic collaborations.

Recent compositions include "...pour une seule nuit" for string quartet, first performed by the JACK String Quartet, and Von Taufedern und Sternen, for soprano and chamber ensemble, premiered by the Argento Ensemble. A version for large orchestra and soprano was premiered in July 2010 by Julia Weigel and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Baden-Baden, Germany. As a pianist, he premiered his Chamber Concerto for piano and string octet with the JACK Quartet and Mivos Quartet in 2011, followed by an artist residency at the Djerassi Foundation in California. In April 2012, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) presented his composition Wir in New York. The first performance of Indigo for orchestra, written as a commission for the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, was premiered in May 2012. Most recently, Soprano Lucia Rizzi and Ensemble Plurimo presented his new work Brise Marine at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy, in June 2012. 2013 started off with a portrait concert: Matthias Pintscher and the Ensemble Intercontemporain presented selected works at the Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival in Germany. His creative output spans a wide range of musical genres: works for orchestra, film, and dance, and both electronic and instrumental music.
